Some people find themselves switching jobs or majors to find something that sparks interest or passion. But that hurdle becomes harder as people prefer professions that are decently paying and not difficult. In fact, many choose their jobs based on whatever is offered to them from friends, family, or local community rather than searching what they truly want. Society also pushes people to professions that they should be having because there is a precedent set to what is possible. As a result, people find jobs and not careers.
Instead of looking for what is near or easiest, people should take a harder and wider look at what they could possibly do as a career. For example, doctors are taught to apply a differential diagnosis, where, instead of relying on their first second, third, or fourth diagnosis, they think through all the possibilities before acting on their determination. Like a doctor, you should create a differential diagnosis on what to spend your time on rather than focusing on what is the first or second opportunity you see. If you are trying to find a career that is not boring, then forget about a career, and think about things you enjoy doing, engaged in intellectually, and care about.
Instead of finding a career that you enjoy, find something that you enjoy and make it into a career.
Recently, there have been more opportunities of people turning what they love to something they can make a livable wage on. For example, in the Dungeons and Dragons community, being a Dungeon Master or someone that manages the games requires massive amounts of time and creativity that very few people can fill. With the growing demand for these people to fill the roles, there have been some people that have turned their efforts in being a Dungeon Master to a full career, which would never had existed before until people made it possible. Sometimes you can love doing simple tasks for other people like scheduling appointments, managing projects, or corresponding with other people. These does not fit society's perception of what a career should be, but this is along the lines of an executive assistant.
When meditating on the idea of turning something you enjoy to a possible career, you will start to create excuses or think about all the challenges you will face to pursue it. However, if you find something that you truly love to do and have a passion for, you will be able to endure the hard things that keep you from your career. This motivation or drive towards your goal is called a competing interest. And these excuses and obstacles become direction to how you can pursue what you enjoy as a career.
If you feel like you have lost interest in what you love, then you need to search for how it was lost. Often times, people lose their passions because it gets buried by something else whether it is a bad experience, a lack of energy, or not enough time. The passion will always be there for you, but it is up to you to unbury it.
When people want success, they have a particular goal in mind because their goals are based off of what society defines as success. Instead of following the road to success, Dr Kanojia, instead, strived for whatever felt right with his heart, which opened doors for even greater success.
When Dr. K got into college/university, he only gained an ego. As a result, his disinterest in college showed in his poor performance in classes, and moved to India to find some meaning. However, his pursuit of being a monk was another form of validation and success. So upon meeting his wife, he became aware of his egotistical pursuit, and stepped back into the real world by getting into medical school. After becoming a holistic doctor, he finally realized that he loved talking with people, and working with the mind. This realization pushed him to start teaching meditation to different clinics, and even start his own clinic for meditation consultation. Later on, he saw that video games in psychiatry was an underdeveloped field, but starting studies and interventions to help fight video game addiction took too long to meet the psychiatry demands. So Dr K walked away from the institutional opportunities, and instead started streaming and created Healthy Gamer.
